Kwanzaa began in 1966 as a holiday to honor African American culture and traditions. The weeklong celebration is observed from December 26 to January 1, and Omaha Public Library will celebrate with activities at Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave. throughout the week. The following activities are planned:
Kwame Dawes, Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the Poets & Writers, Inc. 2012 Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award, will visit Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave., on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. Dawes will perform a poetry reading and take questions from the audience. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
